First I would like to thank the Admin Staff, for giving me the privilege to test this Captive Works. 800S PVR. It is one very nice receiver….

I started off, getting used to the the receiver and remote control.. something I think everyone should do, before they start doing anything with any receiver… I read through the manual.. and decided it was time to get busy… So. I hooked up the receiver to a TV.. and I started going through all of the menu options.. untill I felt comfortable with them.. Which did not take long.. because other than the addition of the USB choices in the menu.. it really is almost exactly like the CW600S Premium… which I already own.. I decided to start off by doing a factory default.. then I installed the latest factory file on the receiver.. I used the USB, and a flash drive to install the file…. It was very easy to use the flash drive and the USB options in the menu to load the file.. I must, tell you all, that I am spoiled when it comes to receivers.. I love USB, over a cable and loader any day of the week.. guess, that is why, I own, a Viewsat Ultra, Satopia, and a Sonicview4000, USB is the only way to go.. I would give the CW800 a rating of 7.5 out of 10, 10 being the best, on the USB install.. even, though it was fairly simple and easy to do.. I like seeing on the TV screen, the file loading, and it telling me it is rebooting, which, this receiver does not show you, on the TV screen.. it does show you on the LED Screen.. what it is doing.. and I am not knocking the receiver.. but it loads via USB as slow as the Satopia does.. Where the Viewsat and Sonicview.. is pretty fast loading files, in comparison….

I decided to hook up the satellite dish to the receiver.. and do Antenna setup.. This was very easy for me to do, because as I already stated, I am already familiar with the 600S Premium.. I like any satellite setup, that not only says which sat it is.. say Echostar 7, but it also puts in brackets (119), it makes it so much easier to go through the satellites you are looking for, when you know, which direction to go, to find them… I give the antenna setup an 8 out of 10… for ease of use..

I installed the latest 3rd party bin, to see how it worked, strictly for testing purposes only.. of course..lol It also was a little slow.. loading, but again, better than using a cable and loader method.. It only took a matter of minutes and the keys rolled, just like they were supposed to.. I would like to say, that the Coder Team for CW’s, are very good, they provide great files.. and very fast with the updates to them also.. I give the ease of installing the 3rd party bin.. an 8 out of 10 also..

I have ran through the channels and I am very pleased with how smoothly, the channels change.. and they change in to the next channel in 1 second or less.. … I only own.. Analog TVs and in comparison to all of the other receivers I own. I would rate this one up with the best of them.. The picture is clear and has great color on it.. I am not that happy with the guide display.. even , though it is easy to read.. but overall.. I would give the picture, guide and color quality.. an 8 out of 10 also..

After getting used to the new remote.. and the locations of the special buttons, such as the red, green, yellow, blue buttons. I must say, I would like to see the SAT button and the FAV button a little larger.. But the ease of use of it, with the numerical keypad at the top of the remote.. instead of at the bottom, like some remotes are.. that I would have to rate the remote also an 8 out of 10..
I know, that now owning a CW600 and a CW800.. I am going to be a fan of Captive Works receivers for a long time to come.. the price is great.. and the ease of use is great… I would give this a total rating of 8 out of 10.I would recommend buying a CW800S PVR…to anyone looking for an inexpensive receiver, that can compete with the best of them… JMO, txsgent
To Captive Works for putting out this receiver..... I give them 4 claps out of 5....

Thanks for the honest review!
Can you tell us about the PVR functions, Scannings, and the results of them such as how long it takes or the quality of the PVR functions?

Thanks GH and Satbum, GH, you always put out great reviews.. but thanks for the kind words... The PVR part, will be my next review.. I don't own a USB hard drive to connect to it yet.. but plan on getting one maybe over the coming weekend.. Then, hopefully I can give a review of that too.. I guess. I could have used a 2 gig flash drive, which is the largest I own, but that would not be fair to the reciever, since it takes almost 2 gigs per movie.. more or less.. will post that review, hopefully in a week or 2... txsgent

Take your time.
I didn't mean to put you on the spot like that.
I only thought that may have been an oversight.

Thanks all.. Satbum, you didn't put me on the spot.. I have wanted to test a PVR.. this will be my first one.. and hopefully.. I will like it.. but to me.. it is just so much easier to just use a DVD recorder.. where you don't have to copy. convert and all to make it work on dvd players...The being able to record on one channel on the same TP.. and watch another.. will be nice.. hopefully one day, they will make a PVR. that records and plays on anything..and just burn it to a DVD... txsgent

Nice review txsgent.

I was wondering how this new pvr unit performed. It is certainly reasonabley priced. I am curious how the pvr side works on this unit as well.

I am sure once you start using a PVR you will see a few more advantages then you listed.

It's not TiVo - but Like mine, Pair it up with a large hardrive, Western Digital my books work well for me - It's not perfect, may miss a show here and their but all in all for 50.00 more than the 600 - well worth the option to save - and getting better with every bin

Default 800 pvr

I bought a 500 gig maxtor hd and then according to others I used swiss knife to format it in Fat32. The recording works great when attended and the time shift function works great too . But i read on here that when you want to do unattended recordings you can select the program thats at least an hour away from the EPG and hit the green button then it starts recording, it will record for the time alloted on the EPG, it will not cut off after the movie ends but will go until your epg is over. you can select a shorter period of time when you set it up with the green button. It gives you a time to start and finish , it gives you a chance to select the length another words. This works about 50% of the time . Also if you select a timer recording it still needs to be an hour away, it works slightly better but not perfect. If you really want to make sure it starts then do the attended recording. I have noticed now that i have a few movies that it is getting slower then when i first installed the HD . When it does this i just turn it off on the back and the speed seems to pick back up and you can select the movie or record without any other problems . This might be due to using it for several days and then suddenly wanting it to play instead of record I think it gets the commands confused. not a big issue since it boots in about 25 seconds. This is my first PVR so im am in awe of it and i'd say a 8/10 also
