The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed President Donald Trump to broadly implement a ban on refugees around the world from entering the country.
The justices granted a request from the Trump administration to block a federal appeals court decision that allowed entry to refugees who had a contractual commitment from a resettlement organization.
According to the Justice Department, the decision would have allowed up to 24,000 additional refugees to enter the United States than would otherwise have been eligible.

The Supreme Courtís ruling gives Trump a partial victory as the high court prepares for a key October hearing on the constitutionality of Trumpís controversial executive order.
A week into his presidency, Trump signed an executive order that put a blanket ban on all refugees, as well as a travel ban affecting citizens from seven majority-Muslim countries.
After the initial ban was blocked by federal courts, Trump signed a new executive order on March 6 banning travelers from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days.
It also locked out most refugees for 120 days in a move Trump argued was necessary to prevent terrorist attacks.

The 90-day travel ban lapses in late September and the 120-day refugee ban will expire a month later.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday night: "We are pleased that the Supreme Court has allowed key components of the order to remain in effect. We will continue to vigorously defend the order leading up to next month's oral argument in the Supreme Court."
The administration has yet to say whether it will seek to renew the bans, make them permanent or expand the travel ban to other countries.
In a ruling last week, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins of legal U.S. residents would be exempt from the travel ban.
The Justice Department opted not to appeal that part of the 9th Circuit decision.
