I use a Viewsat Pro and record a lot of movies/shows I want to keep. I have a pretty simple process to do this and thought it may help someone else trying to do the same or similar. I do not have experience with any other receivers though.

The Viewsat Pro records (PVR function to externat hard drive) to a Linux partition and you need special software to read this partition and the files on it. For this I use the program "DiskInternals Linux Reader" which is free ( http://diskinternals-linux-reader.en.softonic.com/ ) for Windows (i am using Win XP) . Hook up the hard disk to your PC and you can with DiskInternals Linux Reader, read and convert (extract) the files to your PC in a readable format to Windows. At this point you can re-name the file (s) with a " .avi " extension and it should play as a MP4 (Divx) file. You might need to install Divx or MP4 codecs to get it to play if your PC does not already play these type of files.
I then use the program " Video-re-do TV Suite " to trim out unwanted video (commercials etc.) and it then records directly to DVD. This program works well for me but there are probably many others that can be used. It's not free but has a free trial period. ( http://www.videoredo.com/en/index.htm )

Hope this mini guide helps and I welcome any corrections or other tips.

Terry
