U.S. Department of Transportation awarded Qualcomm a contract to provide the United States government and Mexico with a satellite-based vehicle tracking system.

According to the DoT, the contract will provide the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration with the location, speed, information, trip details, date, time and mileage of trucks entering and exiting the country. Using a GPS system and wireless technology to monitor the trucks, the operation is part of the cross-border trucking demonstration project, the agency said.

Earlier this year, the Department of Transportation and Mexico's Secretaria de Communicaciones y Transportes agreed to test satellite technologies as an enforcement tool for the cross-border trucking demonstration project. The trucking companies will have the systems installed at no cost and the units are not required on U.S. trucking companies operating only in the States.
