Hey everyone, I have been reading for about a month now on the world of FTA and the pros and cons of the HD receivers currently available. In my current price range I have found two receivers that meet my budget.

The Captain 8000HD can be picked up at a local store to where I live for 235$ +txs

The Coolsat 8000 can be picked up for 250$ from a posting I found on Craigslist.

I am aware of the captains current limitations (bev/mpeg2 encoding) but these are not things that really bother me. I would only be shooting for bev birds anyways based on the positioning of my apartment.

I was a bit skeptical about captain at first because of some of the support horror stories I heard but from what I understand that has gotten a lot better. Plus now with the IKS dongle it has a pretty nifty advantage over the coolsat model

My final question is... what would you do. I'm just curious given the scenario at hand what receiver others would pick. I'm having a lot of difficulty picking between.

Interesting how I chose to post this in the Captain forum vs the the Coolsat forum. Maybe I want to be convinced to get the Captain model by it's users :P

Thanks in advance

Have to admit I haven't been following the Captain receiver much lately, so I'm not sure what the timing of releases has been like....

The Captain 8000 is easier to load than the CS8000, although there are issues with loading through the USB on the Captain 8000.

Depending on your level of knowledge with setting up receivers, it's my understanding that the CS8000 performs better when setup properly....Now keep in mind that file releases from the NORW Group for the CS have been better, but there are issues with the files these days...

Ultimately the decision is yours.....

I was under the impression that the only problems loading through usb were for DN files which shouldn't affect me if I'm only looking for bev (which I am). I could have completely misinterpreted what I read however.

I have also heard of the recent NORW group slow down falling behind in support. Which is some what of a black mark against them for my decision. Which brings me back to the IKS solution for the Captain.

I really appreciate the post CsFTAForever, I think I'm still leaning a bit more towards the Captain.

The Captain issue with loading through the USB is for loading anything to the receiver...Team Captain has recommended that all loading be done with the serial cable and loader....This would also apply if you were choose the CS8000 (no USB ports)...

Good luck..let us know how you make out!!!

So coming back after a bit more reading, I think I have made up my mind on the Captain model. I would however still be interested in others choice if you were in my situation with these two receivers. I'm no longer looking for comparison, more like a type of poll.
