Ok..I happened into this receiver by chance when I paid a personal visit to one our site sponsors store. My intent that day was to upgrade my switches and connect a few more receivers for my kids to use...Well I walk out with the KBox K1 Heros receiver as well.
The receiver comes in a nice black shiny black box, the dongle in a second box. When I got this home..as all guys like to do...I unwrapped my new technology....
Here's what came in the two boxes....
Receiver;
Remote Control with 2 AAA batteries
Cheap video and sound cables (always toss these...crappy!!)
Manual
KBox K1 Heros receiver...(Pics are posted in the first look posts).
Dongle;
Small silver serial to Ethernet converter
Power supply
Short serial cable
Manual
The receiver has very nice clean look to it from the front with a pop open door on the right that houses a USB port and a slot for a card expansion unit. The face of the receiver is a very nice gloss black with green numbers and letters when turned on.
When first powered on you are prompted with a setup screen for language, time zone and day light saving time settings. Once this is complete, the receiver moves on to ask you if you'd like to auto scan for satellites and channels. If you say yes, the receiver cycles through all possible LNB types and detects your LNB type, LNB Frequency and switch ports if connected to a switch/es. This is a very nice and user friendly feature. Now having said that, the receiver detected incorrectly one LNB Frequency during the scan. For the experienced FTA'er, this is a non issue as you can bypass the scan and go directly to setting up your own dish settings. After the successful scan for satellites the receiver performs an auto scan for channels on all satellites found.
The Main Menu is very user friendly and easy to navigate. See the attached screen shots.
Once completely setup and connected to my TV (tested both S-Video and component cables along with Digital Optical sound connection). I proceeded to watch some different programs. The first thing that jumped out at me was the video quality on my large screen HD TV (remember this receiver is SD). The picture quality and color were exceptional and in some cases I almost thought I was watching HD programming. The second thing that jumped out at me was the sound quality especially when the program was in Dolby Digital...WOW!!!! This receiver was doing the sound separation with the 5.1 exceptionally well!! At this point I was thinking the manufacturer had done a great job using quality parts (receiver is manufactured in Korea) NICE!!!
Loading the receiver was a breeze using the USB port and very user friendly on what to do. Just put the USB thumb drive in the USB port with the receiver on and a new window opens offering you to upgrade the software...Can't get much easier!!!
Now the dongle setup was very user friendly and easy to attach to the receiver and any home network (dial up should work as long as you can share you connection using Ethernet network cable). There is a guide posted in the KBox K1 Heros (http://www.ftaconcept.com/forumdisplay.php?f=569) discussion area!! The IKS functionality coupled with the receiver quality make this a very attractive proposition....Keep in mind this is a new receiver and will have a few glitches!!!
Now who is it that makes this new kid on the block???? I asked the same question and here is what I was told. The receiver is made in Korea by a new company to FTA receivers. I asked if there was any truth to the rumor that KBox is an offshoot of Coolsat. The answer I got was no. Now, the setup and config along with all the features certainly reminded me of a Coolsat setup.:rolleyes:
Overall I'm very impressed with this receiver and I would probably recommend it to close friends!:D
Excellent Receiver KBox!!!
BTW the KBox K2 Xtreme is the PVR version of the K1 Heros!!
Cheers
