Hello all this is my first post at this board. Lots of good info. I should be receiving my first fta box next week, a Coolsat 7100. I want to ask about the dongle. Is anyone using one yet with the Coolsat 7100 and if it works ok? I have been reading about the pros and cons of using such a device but was wondering if anyone had any experience with one. I see there is a DN3. Will this work with the 7100? Are there other brand dongles that work or must you use the DN3? Are there any place in the US I can get this from. I see that Coolsat Canada has them but would like to order from someone in the US.

Thanks
MLG

I was wondering what's means dongle...

I can download it from another forum and bring it here, but I don't know what is it exactly.

Dongle is still an up and comming technology and if you say you are just getting into FTA then you must have done a lot of reading. Dongle has not been tested by many yet so it is still being tested.

Q. What is A Dongle?
A. Dongle is a small piece of hardware that connects to a computer. The usual
function of a dongle is to authenticate a piece of software. Without the dongle,
the software will run only in a restricted mode, or not at all. Dongles are used by
some proprietary vendors as a form of copy prevention or digital rights
management, because it is much harder to copy a dongle than to copy the
software it authenticates. Despite being hardware, however, dongles are not a
complete solution to the trusted client problem.
Vendors of software-protection dongles (and dongle-controlled software) often
use terms such as hardware key, hardware token, or security device instead of
dongle, but the term "dongle" is much more common in day-to-day use.vendor to
engage in vendor lock-in and charge more than it would otherwise for the product.

Q. Is this Legal?
A. Yes 100% The puropse of this dongle is to receive weather forecasts and many
cool games that will be added soon

Q. Why Is my power cord different?
A. This product is iimported from Korea they sell a adapter at low cost in any
electronic store keep in mind you do not need a power converter as the
dongle supports 110V and 220V.All you need is a adapter to convert the plug

Q. What does this do with my Coolsat FTA Receiver?
A. The dongle connects to the coolsat receiver and allows the receiver to connect
to the internet to receive updates, weather information, and much more.

There are some resellers in the states selling the CS dongle...cost is averaging $90....

As far as I am aware, very few are actually testing this. I strongly recommend that all that are interested in using a dongle (IKS...aka Internet Key Sharing) do a lot of reading and understand the risks/rewards associated with IKS.

In simplistic terms, dongles convert the serial port to a network port allowing serial devices to connect to the Internet through home networks to receive updates via servers hosted on the Internet. There is in most cases software updates required to the devices using a dongle and then some basic knowledge of TCP IP.

Do your research, know what you are getting into....Good Luck!!

Cheers

Thanks for the info. I have been doing a lot of reading on this board. Lots of good information. I have been considering the pros and con’s about doing an IKS. I can handle some TCP IP. But I think I may see what others that are testing come back and say about how well it works. It may or may not be the way to go. Like I said in my first post my receiver should be here next week. So as a newbie I’m sure I will need to ask for some help but I think I have found most of what I need by searching this board.
