a big thank you to each & everyone running this site. My usb port has been inoperable for some time now. I always use the serial port on the bk of receiver but would love to use my usb like I did the first couple of times. Anyone know how to solve this problem on captain 8000HD?

Go factory default,
Factory default,
Factory Firmware, might fix your USB then it's software related.
latest bin
Check USB once more to be sure.

You might want check out the IKS Dongle for Captain. It might be wave of future for your stb.. As it stood up to ecm yesterday.

I think I tried reloading factory default some time back....used loader 1.24 & downloaded file that came with it (believe I tried 2 different bin files with that dated 2007 then went to 2004)..........unsuccessful
so I just kept loading with serial cable.
By the way, I don't really understand why we would want to get a dongle. Isn't captain 8000HD suppose to be for high definition? (even though I haven't been able to get HD thru it). What are the advantages of an IKS dongle besides HD?

Couple of things you can do before you try flashing back to factory.
1. Assuming the USB thumb drive you are using still works when connected to your PC. Plug the USB thumb drive into your PC, find out what drive letter it assigned...(example: e: ). Open and command prompt window...click Start, Run..type in "cmd" and press enter(where e: is the drive letter assigned). From the command window type "fdisk e: /mbr" press enter. This will rewrite the master boot record on the USB thumb drive. Now format the thumb drive in windows, by right clicking on the drive in Windows Explorer and choose format. Make sure you choose FAT32 as the format type.
Try the USB thumb drive with the files unzipped at the root of the thumb drive (not in a folder on the thumb drive).
2. If there is a hardware issue with your receiver USB port, the tumb drive will not get power from the port. 99% of all thumb drives light up in some way when inserted into a USB port that has power to it. If the thumb drive lights up, it's not a hardware issue and I would force flash with the serial cable to the most current factory file. If the thumb drive does not light up, hardware has failed and you'll need to get it fixed...If this is case I'd contact Captain and proceed with an RMA request to return the receiver for warranty repair (make sure if you do send it back that only the factory file is installed).
Cheers

that sounds like so much fun + maybe it might work because the usb device does blink when stb turns on but then nothing happens. But when I type fdisk x/mbr, my pc says that it's not a recognized internal or external command :(
what now?

What was your drive letter for USB stick;
"fdisk x: /mbr"
x = your driver letter for USB stick

no actually I've typed in fdisk g:/mbr, where g is my usb drive. My usb is recognized by my pc & it is functioning properly but my pc doesn't recognize the fdisk command.

When you open the command window make sure you are at C:\Documents and Settings\whatever> then type fdisk g: /mbr...(there must be a space between the drive letter and the forward slash).
fdisk is an internal command to every PC...check to make sure you are working from the c: drive when entering the command.

ok, found the problem...feel so silly, but in case anyone else every gets this problem:
found an ancient usb device. Seems as if my captain 8000hd didn't read the newer usb device. loaded new bin but now the signal & quality aren't there......anyways I'm happy I can load thru usb :)
