DIRECTV's New HD Satellite Launches March 17
The satellite will expand high-def capacity for local and national channels.

Washington, D.C. (March 6, 2008) -- DIRECTV's next satellite for High-Definition services is scheduled to launch on Monday, March 17.

Sea Launch, the company that will launch the satellite, said yesterday that liftoff is expected at 3:49 p.m. Pacific time on St. Patrick's Day.

Once operational, which could take from 60-90 days, the new satellite (DIRECTV 11) will expand DIRECTV's capacity to 150 national HD channels and 1,500 local high-def channels.

DIRECTV's current satellite fleet has a capacity of roughly 100 national HD channels.

Sea Launch said it will provide live coverage of the DIRECTV 11 mission via satellite and on the company's website, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time on March 17.
